Giants-Texans pregame thoughts: • There are different games during the season when you feel like you can learn a lot about a team. This feels like one of those games after the coaches turned up the heat this week. Had Harbaugh calling out a running back — any running back — to step up and Dennard Wilson putting the defense's effort on blast. This team has proven to be mentally tough this season, so we'll see how they respond today. • JJ McCarthy is a total wild card. Really impossible to predict what we'll see him from today. But I do expect the offense to shift back to what we saw in the opener. McCarthy's legs should help open up some lanes on zone read. But the Texans have a stout run defense. Won't be easy to just ground-and-pound their way through this one. • Cam Skattebo is out of the doghouse. Expecting a time share with Tyrone Tracy, with Devin Singletary mixed in. Every time I hear Warner’s analysis I wonder why he doesn’t have an even bigger platform. He provides insight like a QB expert and not someone just hyping everyone. To his points on McCarthy, I think Nagy deserves a ton of credit for scheming up so many plays where the first read was open, and then McCarthy’s arm talent took over. "I was pretty harsh on the trade, harsh on J.J. He's made me look pretty dumb these five quarters he's played. I still think my skepticism was warranted - I think a lot of people just wanted to believe that he was good because the Giants traded for him. If you go back to the end of his time in Minnesota, I probably didn't weigh that enough that he was starting to play better those last couple of games. I'll get to the defense shortly, but wanted to post this before anyone else gets cut! · Quoting Dan Duggan: Not enough hours in Mondays lately! Better late than never, here's the Giants' offensive snap counts vs. the Saints: • Nobody, including Harbaugh, likes a four-man RB rotation. That needs to end. Eliminating Najee Harris from the equation is the obvious call. I note every week here how he has no juice. If he does fall out of the rotation, I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes the next vet sent packing. Devin Singletary has done a nice job in limited reps, so if they want to keep him in the mix, maybe as the third-down back, that's fine. But it's time to go back to featuring Cam Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy. They're the best RBs on the roster. Giants-Saints pregame thoughts: • Finally, no rain! Will be nice to watch a game that isn't heavily impacted by the weather. • The Giants were forced into the best version of their offense because they were trailing by two scores in the second half of last week's game. Don't want Jameis Winston dropping back 60 times every week, but the best players on this offense are Malik Nabers and Isaiah Likely. The offense needs to run through them. If you have to live with a bad pick here and there, that's OK because Jameis is also delivering yards/touchdowns. • Nabers saying he's only 80% back is encouraging considering he has 17 catches for 233 yards and two touchdowns in the past two games. That seems like an accurate assessment because he has left some plays on the field while being productive. I can’t rule anything out, but I think it would be crazy to trade anything for a QB. They committed to Jameis as the backup. This is why. Weird that the first reaction by so many now that the backup has to play is it’s time to find an upgrade. I get it if people are spooked by the performance Monday, but if Jameis was consistent, he wouldn’t be a backup. He’s just as likely to throw for 400 yards Sunday as he is to look like he did in LA. Don’t see the point in trading for a young QB, who would need to learn the offense on the fly.
