• There are different games during the season when you feel like you can learn a lot about a team. This feels like one of those games after the coaches turned up the heat this week. Had Harbaugh calling out a running back — any running back — to step up and Dennard Wilson putting the defense's effort on blast. This team has proven to be mentally tough this season, so we'll see how they respond today.
• JJ McCarthy is a total wild card. Really impossible to predict what we'll see him from today. But I do expect the offense to shift back to what we saw in the opener. McCarthy's legs should help open up some lanes on zone read. But the Texans have a stout run defense. Won't be easy to just ground-and-pound their way through this one.

• Nobody, including Harbaugh, likes a four-man RB rotation. That needs to end. Eliminating Najee Harris from the equation is the obvious call. I note every week here how he has no juice. If he does fall out of the rotation, I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes the next vet sent packing.
Devin Singletary has done a nice job in limited reps, so if they want to keep him in the mix, maybe as the third-down back, that's fine. But it's time to go back to featuring Cam Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy. They're the best RBs on the roster. And both should benefit whenever the change to JJ McCarthy comes, as that will open up some lanes on zone reads.

Giants-Saints pregame thoughts:
• Finally, no rain! Will be nice to watch a game that isn't heavily impacted by the weather.
• The Giants were forced into the best version of their offense because they were trailing by two scores in the second half of last week's game. Don't want Jameis Winston dropping back 60 times every week, but the best players on this offense are Malik Nabers and Isaiah Likely. The offense needs to run through them. If you have to live with a bad pick here and there, that's OK because Jameis is also delivering yards/touchdowns.
• Nabers saying he's only 80% back is encouraging considering he has 17 catches for 233 yards and two touchdowns in the past two games. That seems like an accurate assessment because he has left some plays on the field while being productive. This matchup should provide an opportunity for another big game.
• Have covered the RB shake-up plenty. Not much more to say. I don't get the Najee Harris love from the coaching staff, but this…

It took him two tries to sneak it in from the 1 for a TD. All of the sneaks opened up the 19-yard handoff to Cam Skattebo from the tush-push alignment. • The backfield was shaping up as an even split before Tyrone Tracy left with a hamstring injury in the second quarter. Skattebo had played 14 snaps compared to 11 snaps for Tracy at that point. Both backs and Devin Singletary played on early third downs. As the game progressed, Singletary took over as the third-down back while mixing in on early downs. • Cam Skattebo clearly RB1. He took over as the third-down RB with Devin Singletary inactive. Skattebo’s running style is so punishing. If he had just a bit more wiggle he’d be unstoppable, but he somehow still felt productive on a day when he averaged 3 ypc.
He was fortunate that he kicked a fumble out of bounds. That’s two fumbles in three games. Hasn’t hurt them yet, but that luck will run out if he keeps putting the ball on the ground.
Najee Harris has quickly taken over as RB2. The numbers look good (9 carries, 52 yards), but he has very little juice. His running style fits the offense they’re building, but I’m skeptical he’s their second-best RB.

- Sep 22 Dan Duggan (X) Giants offensive snap counts vs. Rams: • You can't have a four RB rotation. Usage feels forced to get RBs 3 and 4 involved. Like Tyrone Tracy getting his lone snap/carry in a high-leverage situation after the fumble recovery deep in Rams territory. Weird spot to use a player with his ball security issues, but the 3-yard loss got negated by a defensive penalty. Then Cam Skattebo got a carry for no gain before Najee Harris was inserted for two carries (3 yards, -3 yards). No one got anything going on the ground, but Skattebo should be the back in all short yardage/red zone situations. Pat Ricard played 31% of the snaps after being at 54% in the opener. That felt game flow dependent, as the Giants mostly played 11 personnel while trailing in the second half. • Malik Nabers' snap share jumped to 74% from 52% in the opener. He had a team-high nine targets on 24 pass plays, demonstrating how central he is to the passing offense. I expect his playing time to increase tonight, although we’ll see if he jumps right back to the 90% workload he logged when fully healthy. The Giants can probably get away with limiting some snaps just because of how much they rotate personnel. Nabers can be spared some snaps when they're in heavy personnel and they lean on Malachi Fields’ blocking. The Rams made a major investment in upgrading at cornerback this offseason, trading for Trent McDuffie and signing Jalen Watson. (Side note: I'm not sure the Giants' reported interest in trading for McDuffie was accurate.) McDuffie and Watson played sides in the opener, so I’m not expecting McDuffie to travel with Nabers.
