- Arvell Reese and Sonny Styles both now rank top 10 in PFF grade at LB (min. 400 snaps). Both the Cardinals starters rank bottom 10. Hard not to imagine what that kind of presence would be doing for the defense right now.
- The foot injury Micah McFadden suffered 11 snaps into last season killed his market in free agency. He re-signed with the Giants on a modest prove-it deal that looked regrettable after Arvell Reese unexpectedly slid to the fifth pick and bumped McFadden out of the starting lineup. Tremaine Edmunds' season-ending shoulder injury opened the door for McFadden to recoup some money this year in playing time incentives and in the future as he's set to hit the market again after this season
- Giants defensive snap counts vs. Texans: • It's so important to hit on a few mid-level free agent signings every offseason. The Giants certainly did with DJ Reader. His two-year, $12 million contract looks like an absolute bargain. Bobby Jamison-Travis has ditched the redshirt and might already be the second-best run-stopper on the D-line. His emergence allowed the Giants to use Darius Alexander almost exclusively in passing situations, which masks his deficiencies against the run. If there's a position I had to predict a trade, it's defensive tackle. This group is getting by, but could really use a solid piece to complement Reader. And I'd expect Dean Lowry to be a practice squad elevation before long. • Abdul Carter is a machine. He was back to playing nearly ever snap after being on a pitch count last week due to a calf injury. On the Texans' game-tying drive late in regulation every member of the D-line was on a knee catching their breath during a timeout and Carter was…

Arvell Reese: Not a traitor!
Look at the effort running down the ball downfield even after missing the sack. He's an athletic specimen.
This is the kind of effort and hustle Dennard Wilson expects from his players. · Quoting Jordan Raanan: Dennard Wilson thought Sunday vs. Saints was #Giants worst tackling game.
"I wasn't happy with our effort running to the ball."
How do they deal with it?
"Confront everything."
Guys who don't run to the ball he calls "traitors."

- Oct 26 Jordan Raanan (X) Funny because Arvell Reese told me recently he was a RB when he was younger. I told him we all needed video of that. Imagine trying to tackle a young Arvell Reese? Think he ditched it though by middle school if my memory serves correct. · Quoting Galactic Peasant: @JordanRaanan He could probably be the Giants lead back, if he put his mind to it.
- Oct 26 Pat Leonard (X) Arvell Reese on the Giants’ coaches: “They challenged us to stop the run, and the biggest thing was run to the ball, swarm to the football. There was too much loafing around on the field, and that’s not how big players are supposed to play." On a major response by the Giants’ players in Houston
- Oct 26 Dan Duggan (X) This is the play I referenced last night. This kid is really something. And it’s almost comical how hard he hits guys · Quoting Jordan Raanan: Arvell Reese: Not a traitor! - Arvell Reese on new Giants MLB Micah McFadden: “I thought Micah played great, bro. Micah was literally everywhere. I’d be running to the ball and I’d see Micah flying to the ball like, what? “Micah played great, Micah flew around. Me and Micah communicated. That’s what we did all week, every presnap we were talking about seeing something. I tip my hat to Micah. It was his moment, he showed up and showed out.”
- Insane hustle by Arvell Reese on that play. He blitzed and went past CJ Stroud. He then made the tackle after the checkdown 15 yards downfield.

Tremaine Edmunds out for the season. · Quoting Dan Duggan: Giants LB Tremaine Edmunds’ shoulder injury season-ending, per sources.
Another major blow for the Giants, who have already lost QB Jaxson Dart and OLB Brian Burns and a handful of other contributors to season-ending injuries.
Edmunds had played every defensive snap, helping rookie LB Arvell Reese’s acclimation to the NFL. Micah McFadden steps into Edmunds’ role. John Harbaugh has stated that the Giants have three starting ILB, so McFadden gets his shot.

- Oct 23 Pat Leonard (X) Just saw early part of #Giants practice. I expect LB Tremaine Edmunds (shoulder), CB Greg Newsome (concussion) & TE Theo Johnson (neck) to be out vs Texans Looks like they should have both tackles Andrew Thomas & Jermaine Eluemunor, safety Jevón Holland and corner Paulson Adebo Will have official player statuses out this afternoon. I’d expect Giants LB corps to be Micah McFadden & Arvell Reese
- Giants defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson mentions rookie Arvell Reese as a possibility for the green dot/playcaller role on defense in Houston with middle linebacker Tremaine Edmunds injured. The first name he said was Micah McFadden’s. Said he has confidence in all the candidates, but stressed that Reese can handle it
- Giants-Saints defensive snap counts (trying to post before any more cuts): • Slight uptick in DJ Reader's playing time. Has to be incredibly challenging to limit his snaps because he is far and away their best DT. His TFL on third-and-goal before halftime could have been a game-changing play. Shelby Harris is a tier or two below, and then it drops off a cliff when they get to the young guys. • Abdul Carter was dominant early with the consecutive holding penalties. Bad tackles just don't have a chance against him. He was on a pitch count while playing through a calf injury. He was quieter as the game progressed, but it also turned into a run-heavy second half. Kayvon Thibodeaux has been better the past two weeks, but they still need more. The roughing the passer penalty was just unnecessary. I'll just say the Jihad Ward release was not a surprise. Trace Ford is out of practice squad elevations. I'm not sure it's a lock that he gets signed to the 53. You're seeing the difference…

- Oct 18 Dan Duggan (X) Ballsy decision by the Saints to kick that 58-yarder. Giants' defense is totally in sync. The players behind the blitz are attacking everything so there's no easy completions. Have seen Arvell Reese line up as a straight up edge rusher on a few snaps. Dennard Wilson in total control.

"It's always fun to turn on the film and see Arvell when he makes contact with people because it doesn't look good (for them)." · Quoting Rookie Watch: Arvell Reese plays with some of the MOST VIOLENCE you’ll ever see out of a LB. Throat slamming RB’s, one-handed tackles, suplexes, and flying mouth-guards. The Giants rookie LB is one of the SCARIEST to play the position as of recent 😳🥊

- Giants' defensive snap counts vs. Commanders: • Very even split among the top three defensive tackles. That's mostly because Darius Alexander was used as an interior rusher on passing downs. He has replaced Chauncey Golston, while Jihad Ward replaced Kayvon Thibodeaux (who has shifted outside to replace Brian Burns). DJ Reader has been so steady. They've shown impressive discipline not over-using him, which can't be easy because the drop off is significant when he's off the field. Jacory Croskey-Merritt's 33-yard touchdown run on the opening drive came on the first play after Reader and Shelby Harris were replaced by Alexander and CJ Okoye. Okoye got easily displaced from the gap where the run went. Harris has been playing better recently, but the depth here is still a concern. Ward failed to make an impact in his debut in his role as an interior rusher on passing downs and a DE in the base 3-4. • Abdul Carter continues to play at an extremely high level. He had six pressures…

Jeremiyah Love is averaging 3.7 yards per carry and 3.3 yards per catch this season.
He had 12 carries for 22 yards against the Lions, with zero catches.
Meanwhile, Arvell Reese already looks like a star for the Giants.

Giants-Commanders (obviously watching the game while I type this!) pregame thoughts:
• Would expect a ground-heavy game plan in these conditions. Probably going to call on more of a game manager performance from Jameis Winston.
I remain intrigued by the idea of a JJ McCarthy package. He's more mobile than Winston, but I don't view him as some huge run threat. Maybe they insert him in the red zone if the offense is struggling.
• The Commanders run defense has been solid, but the Giants need to find a way to generate some explosives. I think reintegrating Tyrone Tracy is the best route to that, but not expecting a huge uptick in his usage. Think we'll continue to see more of Najee Harris. Wouldn't be surprised by some jumbo packages, especially with the lack of WR depth.
• Malik Nabers wasn't happy with his lack of targets in the second half of last week's game. This is a favorable matchup for Nabers, but the weather may limit his opportunities. Interested to see how they manage…

- Oct 11 Dan Duggan (X) Giants REALLY should have done this... · Quoting Dan Duggan: Arvell Reese was used as a spy when Ohio State played mobile QBs. Seems like a natural fit for him today against Jayden Daniels. This is how Reese described the keys to that role: "You can't get caught up in the line. You can't let a lineman grab you because then it's over. You can't be too far back, so you've got to creep on the line, too. You've got to take the right angle."
- Oct 11 Jordan Raanan (X) On Jayden Daniels' 38-yard TD run he hit 20.58 mph. Left Arvell Reese in the dust. Commanders 19, Giants 6
- Oct 11 Jordan Raanan (X) Can't run at Arvell Reese. Too physical.
