  The Giants' "unofficial" depth chart for Week 1 officially lists a few notable developments that we saw as the preseason progressed: • Chauncey Golston as a starting DE alongside DJ Reader and Shelby Harris. • Greg Newsome and Deonte Banks starting corners. Also: • Tyrone Tracy, Najee Harris and Devin Singletary all listed as RB2. • Darnell Mooney listed as the starting WR alongside Malik Nabers. • Kayvon Thibodeaux no longer listed as a co-starter with Abdul Carter. • They list a starting nickel corner now, and it's Dru Phillips, as expected. • Jevon Holland listed as the top punt returner. Uhh, no. That'll be Braxton Berrios.

  Couple salary cap/roster notes: • The Giants are $1.3M over the cap, according to the NFLPA database. They will need to be under by Wednesday because top 51 accounting ends when the season starts. They don't need to do anything dramatic since they only need a few million to operate (at least for now). Paulson Adebo, Jevon Holland, Darius Slayton and Jon Runyan have the biggest base salaries for a restructure. It doesn't really matter who they restructure, but Schoen has typically avoided restructures on possible cap casualties, so from that group, I suspect Holland will be first up. • Schoen teased the signing of a veteran defensive lineman to the practice squad next week (don't think Jihad Ward's IG video was an announcement). They have the maximum of six veterans on their practice squad, so they'd need to cut someone from this group — WR Braxton Berrios, WR Jalin Hyatt, WR Charlie Jones, OL Darian Kinnard, DL Josh Tupou, LB Malik Harrison — to add another vet.   There were three new players suited up on the practice squad. One appeared to be C Kingsley Eguakun, who was just cut by the Browns. Made two starts for the Lions last season. There were also two players named Jones, so a little tougher to pin down. My guess on the WR/KR is Charlie Jones, who was the Bengals' returner for the past three seasons. Don't think Braxton Berrios' job is in jeopardy, but Jones is a legit backup option. My guess on the CB is Elijah Campbell, a third-round pick by the Cardinals in 2024. Missed his rookie season and saw limited action last season.

WR/KR Braxton Berrios is a lock to be elevated. He’ll serve as the punt returner. Also expect him to return kickoffs alongside Deonte Banks. LB Malik Harrison is the other strong possibility. Harrison was a core special teamer in Baltimore from 2020-24, so I think they brought him in to play. The Giants have an open roster spot, but not expecting them to fill it today because signing a vet like Berrios or Harrison would guarantee their salary for the season. They can wait to sign one next week or continue the elevations for the first three games. As I noted yesterday, I don’t think the elevations will tell us anything about Malik Nabers’ status *unless* they sign/elevate a second WR from the practice squad. That would be a very bad sign. Otherwise, the intrigue will continue…
