Giants-Texans pregame thoughts:
• There are different games during the season when you feel like you can learn a lot about a team. This feels like one of those games after the coaches turned up the heat this week. Had Harbaugh calling out a running back — any running back — to step up and Dennard Wilson putting the defense's effort on blast. This team has proven to be mentally tough this season, so we'll see how they respond today.
• JJ McCarthy is a total wild card. Really impossible to predict what we'll see him from today. But I do expect the offense to shift back to what we saw in the opener. McCarthy's legs should help open up some lanes on zone read. But the Texans have a stout run defense. Won't be easy to just ground-and-pound their way through this one.
• Cam Skattebo is out of the doghouse. Expecting a time share with Tyrone Tracy, with Devin Singletary mixed in. Harbaugh hoping someone emerges and they can ride that back.
• Malik Nabers has been on a tear: 6-112-1,…

Among the five questionable players, the two safeties are the most uncertain from what I’ve gathered.
I believe Jevon Holland will try to get final clearance from the concussion protocol in the morning before the team flies to Houston. Impossible to predict how that will go. Tyler Nubin’s status is up in the air as well.
Expecting Paulson Adebo to be activated and start at corner.
Jermaine Eluemunor and Marcus Mbow being limited the past two days is encouraging, but don’t have definitive word on their statuses. No game status for Andrew Thomas, so he’s good to go (or at least as good as he can be with the lingering groin injury). · Quoting Dan Salomone: Giants Game Statuses for Week 7
Out:
▪️LB Tremaine Edmunds (Shoulder)
▪️CB Greg Newsome II (Concussion)
Doubtful:
▪️TE Theo Johnson (Neck)
Questionable:
▪️CB Paulson Adebo (Knee)
▪️RT Jermaine Eluemunor (Calf)
▪️S Jevón Holland (Concussion)
▪️OL Marcus Mbow (Knee)
▪️S Tyler Nubin (Neck)

I'll get to the defense shortly, but wanted to post this before anyone else gets cut! · Quoting Dan Duggan: Not enough hours in Mondays lately! Better late than never, here's the Giants' offensive snap counts vs. the Saints:
• Nobody, including Harbaugh, likes a four-man RB rotation. That needs to end. Eliminating Najee Harris from the equation is the obvious call. I note every week here how he has no juice. If he does fall out of the rotation, I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes the next vet sent packing.
Devin Singletary has done a nice job in limited reps, so if they want to keep him in the mix, maybe as the third-down back, that's fine. But it's time to go back to featuring Cam Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy. They're the best RBs on the roster. And both should benefit whenever the change to JJ McCarthy comes, as that will open up some lanes on zone reads.

LT Andrew Thomas was surprised the spotter called for a concussion check Sunday vs. Saints. They called for it at the start of the following drive. He was lumbering from the groin injury he's dealing with. Giants decided to just keep him out.
Thomas will see again this week if he can go. May need to rest at some point to assure he doesn't tear it completely and miss significant time.

- Oct 18 Dan Duggan (X) Giants-Saints pregame thoughts: • Finally, no rain! Will be nice to watch a game that isn't heavily impacted by the weather. • The Giants were forced into the best version of their offense because they were trailing by two scores in the second half of last week's game. Don't want Jameis Winston dropping back 60 times every week, but the best players on this offense are Malik Nabers and Isaiah Likely. The offense needs to run through them. If you have to live with a bad pick here and there, that's OK because Jameis is also delivering yards/touchdowns. • Nabers saying he's only 80% back is encouraging considering he has 17 catches for 233 yards and two touchdowns in the past two games. That seems like an accurate assessment because he has left some plays on the field while being productive. This matchup should provide an opportunity for another big game. • Have covered the RB shake-up plenty. Not much more to say. I don't get the Najee Harris love from the coaching staff, but this…

RT Jermaine Eluemunor (calf) LT Andrew Thomas (groin) S Tyler Nubin (neck) CB Colton Hood (concussion)
- Oct 14 Dan Duggan (X) Actually, Smoot was out there. Confusion is that he was listed as No. 59 but apparently was wearing No. 96. Seems to indicate that CJ Ravenell, who had been No. 96, was cut to open the spot for Smoot · Quoting Dan Duggan: Players not spotted at practice: LT Andrew Thomas (groin), RT Jermaine Eluemunor (calf), OLB Abdul Carter (?), CB Colton Hood (concussion) and S Tyler Nubin (neck). Also didn’t spot OLB Dawuane Smoot, who the team announced last night had signed to the practice squad.
- Oct 14 Dan Duggan (X) I don’t think we’re going to see Thomas at many Wednesday practices, but I wouldn’t be concerned for Sunday. I heard positive initial word on Eluemunor, so I think there’s still a chance he plays Sunday, but we’ll see on that one. Not expecting Hood or Nubin this week based on what I’ve heard to this point. No clue what’s up with Carter. On the positive front, Jason Pinnock (concussion) was suited up for practice. · Quoting Dan Duggan: Players not spotted at practice: LT Andrew Thomas (groin), RT Jermaine Eluemunor (calf), OLB Abdul Carter (?), CB Colton Hood (concussion) and S Tyler Nubin (neck). - An addition to Harbaugh’s award system: He gives a “Purple Heart” award to players “that are working through injury type things, that they play, or they come back from.” Malik Nabers got the award in Week 1 for returning from his knee injury. Andrew Thomas, who is battling through a groin injury, got one last week · Quoting Dan Duggan: Some Giants players’ practice jerseys are featuring patches like the one on Andrew Thomas. It’s something Harbaugh started in his first year in Baltimore to recognize achievements. The muscle represents the amount of participation in the offseason program (believe it’s at least 85 percent). The sword represents playoff wins with the Giants. Players who have made the Pro Bowl have patches for that.
- Andrew Thomas is clearly laboring through his groin injury. He said his pregame workout with the rehab trainer is just part of his warmup routine now. He said he's feeling better, but "I still don't feel like myself. But I'm not going to make an excuse. I have to play better. If this team is going to go where I think it can, I've got to perform better." Thomas said there's no thought of missing a game to heal up. "If it's my decision, I'm going to play. That's just how I am." · Quoting Dan Duggan: LT Andrew Thomas is going through a pregame workout with rehab trainer Allison Boudreau. He's been dealing with a groin injury since Week 2, but he was a full participant on Friday and didn't have a game status. Expecting him to play, but this is a departure from his typical pregame routine.

- Oct 11 Pat Leonard (X) Jameis Winston looked like he was waving his hand before 3rd down there for Matt Nagy to get the call in Andrew Thomas told me against a blitz-heavy defense like this, it's important for play calls to come in early so the QB/offense have time to make checks and react to the defense's at the line Dominic Zvada's FG attempt from 51 yards is good Washington 6, Giants 3 - 55 seconds remaining in 1st Q

- Oct 11 Pat Leonard (X) Andrew Thomas joked to me: “We can’t avoid the rain, huh?” Giants are ready to run the ball A LOT on an ugly weather day. They know this is not just another game against the Commanders · Quoting Mike Garafolo: #Commanders WR Terry McLaurin is a true game-time decision. Even if he does play today, expect his snaps to be limited. Dan Quinn said the wet field and rainy conditions won’t be a factor in the decision. Colleague @john_keim says slight lean to playing. Will update.
