“It’s devastating,” left guard Jon Runyan Jr. told me of Jaxson Dart’s season-ending surgery. “Because seeing him on the sideline during the game, I assumed it would be a couple weeks, the stereotypical 4-to-6 weeks. That’s what everybody was hoping for. And to hear your quarterback is getting knocked out for the season in Week 2, it sucks. It was definitely a shock.”
“The season’s not over,” John Harbaugh said. “But it is for him.”

Couple salary cap/roster notes:
• The Giants are $1.3M over the cap, according to the NFLPA database. They will need to be under by Wednesday because top 51 accounting ends when the season starts.
They don't need to do anything dramatic since they only need a few million to operate (at least for now). Paulson Adebo, Jevon Holland, Darius Slayton and Jon Runyan have the biggest base salaries for a restructure. It doesn't really matter who they restructure, but Schoen has typically avoided restructures on possible cap casualties, so from that group, I suspect Holland will be first up.
• Schoen teased the signing of a veteran defensive lineman to the practice squad next week (don't think Jihad Ward's IG video was an announcement). They have the maximum of six veterans on their practice squad, so they'd need to cut someone from this group — WR Braxton Berrios, WR Jalin Hyatt, WR Charlie Jones, OL Darian Kinnard, DL Josh Tupou, LB Malik Harrison — to add another vet. The other option…

- Giants OL Jon Runyan contract extension details, per source: 2 years, $22M. The extension contains $19.25M in full guarantees, plus an additional $2.25M in injury guarantees. Here's the cap breakdown: 2026: $6.98M (was $11.76M pre-extension) 2027: $12.79M 2028: $14M Runyan had no guaranteed money remaining in his contract so the $9M signing bonus he got essentially takes the place of his $9M salary for this season. His $1.22M salary this year and $9.04M salary next year are fully guaranteed. His $10.25M salary in 2028 contains $2.25M guaranteed for injury only. He also has $500K in per-game roster bonuses in 2027 and 2028. The Giants could cut him after 2027 for $11M in cap savings with $3M in dead money. My $.02: This is a low-risk extension to eliminate a free agency need for next offseason, but doesn't prevent the Giants from pursuing an upgrade in the draft. They could easily move on after next year.
