Something the Saints are going to have to figure out with their CJ Donaldson usage ... it became pretty clear that the Falcons were using him as a tell to send pressure.
I counted 6 times in his first 11 snaps in Week 4 that Atlanta sent 5 or more rushers.

- Oct 7 Jeff Nowak (X) The most frustrating part is that there's a fairly obvious solution: commit to using CJ Donaldson in the actual offense. How they actually go about doing that is a more difficult question to answer.

- The Saints' running game struggles continued in the first half. Backs Travis Etienne, Alvin Kamara and C.J. Donaldson combined to gain 33 yards on 12 carries. Their long run covered 6 yards.
- Saints running back CJ Donaldson has been on the field for 35 snaps on offense through two weeks, which ranks 6th-most among rookie RB's. Obviously a small sample size but his rushing success rate is 100%, with 3 first downs on 3 carries. The UDFA is turning into a cool story.
- What the decision tells you is that Kendre Miller is behind Kamara and Etienne in the rotation ... and that they feel CJ Donaldson has a better pass pro/short yardage (essentially FB) skillset. I don't see this as being an "in the doghouse" situation or anything like that.

I think people are probably reading a little too much into Kendre Miller being inactive. Saints don’t need four active RBs and CJ Donaldson has the short-yardage skillset. Posted about this yesterday.
When I went through the numbers it looked to me like the decision would be between Delp/Kendre to be active. The extra TE makes more sense considering how the Saints are operating. · Quoting Jeff Nowak: Assuming the Saints call up a second practice squad player (my guess would be Kevin Austin again) + emergency QB, they'll need to make six guys inactive. Depending on where they feel the numbers are needed, wouldn't be stunned if one of Kendre/CJ ends up a healthy scratch.

- Sep 20 Jeff Nowak (X) About what I expected. Saints wouldn't have signed CJ Donaldson to the active roster if they didn't plan to use him. This is a good sign that they're comfortable with a full workload for Alvin Kamara. - Sep 18 John Sigler (Bluesky) Good for him, really. Donaldson started out as a high school wide receiver recruit to West Virginia, learned halfback and was listed at tight end, then transferred to Ohio State and led the team in rushing TDs last year. Did well enough at the Shrine Bowl for Saints to pick him up as an UDFA. · Quoting John: In a surprise move, the New Orleans Saints promoted rookie running back CJ Donaldson from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. It's a big deal for the first-year pro.

- Sep 18 Jeff Nowak (X) Saints signed CJ Donaldson to the active (in Zach Wood’s spot) and added long snapper Scott Daly to the practice squad. Saints will have the option to keep 4 RBs active. If they only think three is necessary, question becomes how much you value CJ as a short-yardage option.
