Chargers will soon need to face the consequences of their Rodney Shelley gamble
The Los Angeles Chargers awarded Rodney Shelley with a spot on the 53-man roster, but the pressure is only just starting to ramp up.
- There are tiers within undrafted rookies -- out of these 45 that made initial 53-man rosters, 15 of them got $200,000+ in guaranteed money and 27 in all got $100k+, almost like an eighth round with more guaranteed money than a seventh. What's even more impressive are those who got little or no guaranteed money and still made 53s: Ravens QB Joe Fagnano: $0 Chiefs T Kahlil Benson: $0 Patriots LB Khalil Jacobs: $0 Dolphins FB D.J. Herman: $0 Bucs LB Caden Fordham: $2,000 Commanders K Drew Stevens: $2,500 Chargers CB Rodney Shelley: $5,000 Chargers C Jacob Spomer: $10,000 Giants LS Ben Mann: $10,000 (@spotrac for contract figures) · Quoting Ryan Paganetti: All 45 UDFAs from the 2026 class who made an NFL initial 53-man roster: ARI: Wydett Williams Jr., S, Ole Miss ATL: Malcolm DeWalt IV, CB, Akron ATL: Jack Strand, QB, Minnesota State Moorhead BAL: Ethan Burke, OLB, Texas BAL: Joe Fagnano, QB, UConn CAR: Aaron Hall, DT, Duke CAR: Haynes King, QB, Georgia Tech CAR: Albert Reese IV, OT,…

Chargers' pair of preseason risers have left them with an impossible roster decision
Avery Smith and Rodney Shelley have both been excellent for the Los Angeles Chargers— but they can't both make the final roster.
- Day 20, final day of training camp: - Derwin James picked off Trey Lance on a pass intended for RB Amar Johnson. It looked like there was some miscommunication between Lance and Johnson. James later had what would’ve been a TFL on a Kimani Vidal run. - WR Dalevon Campbell had the catch of the day on a pass from DJ Uiagalelei, making a leaping TD grab over Rodney Shelley, who was draped all over him. Campbell has consistently made highlight-reel grabs throughout camp. - Oronde Gadsden beat Emany Johnson down the sideline for what would’ve been a TD from Justin Herbert, but Gadsden dropped the pass. - Charlie Kolar had a bunch of catches throughout practice. - OLB Andre Carter got into the backfield for what would’ve been a run stop early in practice. Carter also had a pressure where he quickly beat Travis Burke. Carter has been really impressive since arriving about two weeks ago. He could be a guy the Chargers try to keep on the practice squad if another team doesn’t grab him. -…
