- 1d David Lombardi (X) That would be as easy to slow down as a Seattle pass offense that does to JSN too much. Balance is mandatory for efficiency in the NFL · Quoting Gregg Bell: The #Seahawks had 17 called runs to their running backs tonight. Only 4 were runs that went clearly to the left side-- the side of Seattle's new All-Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson. Only 1 of 7 runs in the first half by RBs went to the left. Methinks 13--or 17--of their next 17 runs had better be behind Nelson to the left.

I saw it one play after he pinned the Bears DT chest-down into the turf on a run block. @933KJR

- Oct 27 David Lombardi (X) This is a fair opinion and the logic behind is why I personally thought Quenton Nelson would be a good fit for SF. But the reason the 49ers don't see it that way: -They collectively have the #1 pass-blocking OL *and* the best QB at avoiding sacks in Purdy -Offense is already top-2. It's the defense that's in danger of falling out of the top-10 The 49ers see more perceived value on defense, and they ultimately got Buckner + Osa for less than Seattle paid for Quenton Nelson. This leaves SF with optionality to get even more — whether it be another DL like Khalil Mack or WR fortification (Josh Downs?) · Quoting Joseph Danna: @LombardiHimself I disagree it was the biggest need. That's why I floated the idea. Duh -Seattle needs offensive help WAY more than SF -49ers' best potential trade ROI is *clearly* DL + maybe WR -Draft capital is a limited resource; Seahawks and 49ers should both make highest ROI moves for their respective teams -Worrying about what a rival is doing above maximizing ROI for your own team == losing football ABOVE ALL ELSE: A move for a guard should *never* cause an existential freakout, especially in a year when even the Myles Garrett meltdowns proved to be off-base. - Oct 27 David Lombardi (X) As far an arms race goes, the 49ers can make it a literal one with Seattle by trading for a D-lineman who'll actually face Quenton Nelson in the trenches on Nov. 29. Imagine DeForest Buckner and Quenton Nelson going from being teammates in Indianapolis to clashing with the best teams in football at Levi's a month later
- Oct 27 NFL News Poster (Bluesky) [Holder] If you're trading Quenton Nelson for a third and a fifth two weeks out from the trade deadline, then I think you are in FULL fire sale mode. I don't think it's terrible compensation or anything. Just mean they aren't hesitating. Feels like the Colts are all in.+1
- Oct 27 David Lombardi (X) Of course, Quenton Nelson would upgrade almost any team's LG position — and that's where the 49ers have been weakest in pass protection (Connor Colby has allowed 20 pressures, 2nd-most in NFL). But Colby has also been a plus-run blocker, especially for some of the gap-scheme concepts that the 49ers are increasingly embracing. They ran a ton of power in Atlanta and Colby is a good puller. SF will continue riding O-line cohesion, which has worked well for them, while the offense's biggest issue (by far) has been the WR injury situation

Groupthink will always be a thing, just have to lead it in the right direction 😂 · Quoting David Lombardi: Can we really rule out 49ers' interest in Quenton Nelson just because guard hasn't been a position of massive investment in the past? I'm not so sure. LG has, very clearly, been the one questionable position on the OL. - Oct 24 David Lombardi (X) I'm also not convinced. The 49ers have been willing to pay a premium for tackle and center, but never guard on the contract market. That said, they did spend a 2nd-rounder on Aaron Banks in the draft market. And they wouldn't owe Quenton Nelson top $$$ if they acquired his deal · Quoting Invader49er: @LombardiHimself I'll believe it when I see it.
