Looks like everyone is on the Quenton Nelson train now after we talked about it a couple days ago. Groupthink will always be a thing, just have to lead it in the right direction 😂 · Quoting David Lombardi: Can we really rule out 49ers' interest in Quenton Nelson just because guard hasn't been a position of massive investment in the past?
I'm not so sure. LG has, very clearly, been the one questionable position on the OL. Connor Colby has done well in the run game but ranks last of all qualifying guards in pass-block efficiency, having allowed 15 pressures already this season.
Nelson is a perennial All-Pro still in his prime. Elite pass- and run-blocking metrics that could pair monstrously well with Trent Williams (and some George Kittle combo blocks) on the left side of the O-line.
We saw Kansas City shift to a strategy of heavy O-line investment around this time of Patrick Mahomes' career, post-2020. (Interestingly, the Chiefs seemed to actually de-prioritize WR in favor of OL…

- Oct 27 David Lombardi (X) Of course, Quenton Nelson would upgrade almost any team's LG position — and that's where the 49ers have been weakest in pass protection (Connor Colby has allowed 20 pressures, 2nd-most in NFL). But Colby has also been a plus-run blocker, especially for some of the gap-scheme concepts that the 49ers are increasingly embracing. They ran a ton of power in Atlanta and Colby is a good puller. SF will continue riding O-line cohesion, which has worked well for them, while the offense's biggest issue (by far) has been the WR injury situation

Might Nelson's potential availability on the trade market tempt the 49ers to push their O-line, already ranked #3 in cumulative pass-blocking efficiency, to stratospheric levels?…

- The 49ers allowed 10 pressures against their interior line (6 vs Connor Colby) but their tackles allowed only 1 combined pressure against the Seahawks. Trent Williams delivered a clean sheet. Most importantly, Brock Purdy somehow managed a generally clean game behind Seattle's relentless interior rush — all while severely shorthanded outside. But the 49ers did have Mike Evans
