- Sept. 1 has come and gone. Turns out that the 49ers did indeed handle the Brandon Aiyuk situation after he abandoned the team perfectly. No, they did not need to “just cut him to be done with it” — that would have been a competitively irresponsible play. Now the 49ers have saved salary-cap space by maintaining the proration and they may even be able to recoup space moving forward
