Mike Evans nursing a groin injury
Left practice early on Sunday as a precautionary measure The Niners were without a whopping 23 players in today's final full practice of training camp. Kyle Shanahan said Puni had some residual...
- Height is more than a situational DE, especially with how adaptably Raheem Morris uses DEs. And no, Height doesn’t need to add weight — the speed he’s generating at 239 is also generating power that’s now showing up on NFL tape in pass-rushing situations · Quoting DLineVids: This was a positive run play, but some good things happening here! - Romello Height (239 lbs) controlling his gap vs All-Pro OL Quinn Meinerz (320 lbs) with a broken hand - Upton Stout violently shedding his block - Fred Warner diving to help tackle RB with Stout! #49ers #FTTB

Upton Stout is really Taz from Looney Tunes. Watch the chaos he creates.
It's 3rd & 10. The Dolphins throw a screen, anticipating a screen. Stout runs over the top of the TE, goes full Taz, and spins. The TE goes flying into the ball carrier. Stop. Punt.

- Sep 23 David Lombardi (X) Stout leverages his small frame, which is the main reason he was overlooked, and turns it into an advantage. He makes it harder to block a smaller target. - Of the 49ers' 8 defensive tryouts today, I'm most intrigued by former Jacksonville DB Christian Braswell. 5-11, 181... He has 169 career snaps in coverage with size adaptability to play both slot and outside. Braswell has allowed just 0.70 yards/cover snap and a 67.3 passer rating into his coverage over his career, both great marks. If Upton Stout isn't fully healthy yet, the 49ers will need more help at DB and versatility is essentially mandatory for them at the depth spots. Jacksonville recently cut Braswell with an injury designation but he's healthy now
- Upton Stout: Questionable
- Brutal game on Sunday. The good news for the 49ers is that Shanahan said Upton Stout should be at least close to 100% coming out of the bye. Then it’s fair to wonder when Nate Hobbs can come off IR to give SF a better depth option at CB3 · Quoting Kyle Posey: Jack Jones allowed 5.8 yards of separation on five targets against the Falcons. Add in the penalties and he became unplayable for the 49ers.

Upton Stout: Questionable

- Oct 26 ESPN NFL Injury Report Upton Stout: Questionable
- Oct 26 David Lombardi (X) Shanahan said that Upton Stout was in uniform only for emergency purposes Sunday, but that the 49ers hope that the bye week will allow his shoulder sprain to heal to 100% (or close to it) before the Raiders game. Also big for the 49ers on the injury return front
- Oct 26 Matt Maiocco (X) Coach Kyle Shanahan said a lot of the players who missed this game have chances to come back for the Nov. 8 game against the Raiders. That includes Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel, Demarcus Robinson, Nick Bosa, CJ West, Marques Sigle, Garret Wallow, Luke Gifford, Upton Stout.+1
- Then there's the Jack Jones issue. The 49ers' fourth CB was pressed into action with Upton Stout still battling that shoulder sprain (bye week will be huge for him)... on a day with poor short-game pass defense AND nonexistent pass rush — so conditions were ripe for Atlanta to pick on Jones, who's been a boom-or-bust corner over his career: 5 targets, 4 catches, 2 penalties, 39 yards — most of which moved the chains. The 49ers should get Stout back at closer to 100% for their next game. That'll be huge in combatting the short game and, by extension, reigniting the pass rush. Like everyone else, I am curious about what other move(s) they can make up front to further that cause — but remember that everything on defense is interconnected

Shanahan said it was an injury-related removal. Stout has been playing through an AC sprain and it looks like that might've compromised his ability to fight through contact here. 49ers might've deemed that a liability and went to Ashtyn Davis, whom they blitzed on 2 huge snaps · Quoting JonnyDel: This is what went into Upton Stout's benching last night. 4th down and goal line on the same drive. same stack formation, both interference plays against Diggs and gives up both. Don't know if it was a play they prepped for and were upset with him not playing it the way they game-planned or if he wasn't getting physical enough at the stack point or attacking hard enough.
Clearly, though, giving up the same route vs interference in two key moments cannot be tolerated.

- Oct 20 David Lombardi (X) 2 of Raheem Morris' best play calls after Upton Stout had to exit the game hurt: Blitzing his replacement, Ashtyn Davis. Washington clearly had a matchup advantage vs Davis in coverage (see Treylon Burks deep grab). So Morris fired 2 critical blitz bullets with Davis instead. The first caught Jayden Daniels way off guard and led to an essential throwaway on 3rd-and-long, setting up Malik Mustapha's 4th-down heroics. Morris has made tremendously quick in-game adjustments this season. He next will face the team he used to coach, the Atlanta Falcons

- So far the 49ers have not had a problem down all those D-linemen. Raheem Morris is calling this creatively and aggressively — he has pass rushers in the back seven, including Fred Warner and Upton Stout — and relying on SF's very good DBs. The DE -> DT alignments are also money

- I see some similarities between the Upton Stout and Brock Purdy stories. Versatile players on both sides of the ball 🏈 Stout obviously drafted higher (3rd round), but becoming clear he was under-drafted and also like Purdy, under-recruited 🏈 Smaller frame a factor there for both 🏈 Both use exceptional short-area quickness, helped by those smaller frames, to win physically 🏈 Both have a physical superpower relative to their position: Stout 21 bench press reps, insane for a 180-pound DB... Purdy a 1.55 10-yard split, insane for any QB (especially one without a fast 40) — and Purdy is also wildly strong, especially with his base 🏈 Both have great study skills (WKU coach Tyson Helton said Stout was "locked on him like a radar lock" during film sessions" voluntarily sitting in the first row) Lesson: If you fill a team with football-specific skill sets and fitting chip-on-the-shoulder attitudes — and if you deploy these players correctly — results will follow · Quoting San Francisco…
