Jaelan Phillips: Giving up 59 points is embarrassing, creates critical moment for Panthers
1 more updatefrom 1 source
- 5d Mike Kaye (X) During the 29-yard scramble for a TD by Williams, Devin Lloyd collided with Will Lee’s coverage assignment (Rome Odunze), which basically took him out of the play. If that collision doesn’t happen, it’s probably a 15-yard gain as opposed to a 29-yard TD. Williams did a nice job of cutting to the right, seeing Lloyd and escaping to the left, which also delayed Lloyd’s angle to the ball. Williams vision and speed as a runner are special, man. Side note: Jaelan Phillips’ angry reaction to big plays is evident on basically every score he’s on field for on defense.

- #Panthers HC Dave Canales said Thomas “TI” Incoom had a “phenomenal camp.” Asked if Incoom and Princely Umanmielen have shown they can play all three downs, the coach answered in the affirmative. He essentially said the coaches challenged the OLBs to be able to standout in both phases when their numbers are called. That duo and Trevis Gipson will work opposite Jaelan Phillips against the Bears.
- Not going to speculate on injuries or the like, but the logic I could see in choosing Moon over Gill is this: - Gill is a situational pass rusher, and you’d prefer to give guys like Umanmielen, Trevis Gipson and maybe even Thomas Incoom (who will active every week because of special teams) those reps over Gill. - If you think Moon is a better run stopper than Gill, and think their special teams value is equal or close, that makes sense, given Pat Jones and Jaelan Phillips’ history of injuries and the need for early down run support. - Gill wasn’t a hot commodity after an impressive pass rushing preseason, not sure a week in practice will change that (there’s no new data or film). - Gill has played an entire spring season, maybe they want someone they know who has relatively fresh legs. · Quoting Mike Kaye: The #Panthers announce they’ve released OLB Cam Gill from the p-squad to make room for Moon, who officially signed this morning.
- This is a GOOD preview. · Quoting Clay Harbor: BEARS vs. PANTHERS early PREVIEW A few things I’m watching Week 1: ▪️ Carolina’s offense has to take a jump. Last year: 27th in scoring and 27th in total offense. Dave Canales has handed play-calling to OC Brad Idzik so Bears won’t have real tendencies on him. ▪️ Tet McMillan is a problem. 6’4”, 70 catches, 1,014 yards and 7 TDs as a rookie. Big play threat obviously. ▪️ Carolina is beat up at OT. Ikem Ekwonu is still recovering from his torn patellar tendon and Taylor Moton is out. They do have legitimate depth with former Packers starter Rasheed Walker and first-round rookie Monroe Freeling. ▪️ Jalen Coker is an underrated matchup. Really good from the slot. He only played 11 regular-season games last year, then went 9 catches for 134 yards against the Rams in the playoffs. ▪️ The Panthers invested heavily in their front seven. Jaelan Phillips gives them a legitimate edge threat, Devin Lloyd is a smart, versatile three-down LB…
