They’ve clearly got Saquon on a pitch count … why waste one of those pitches on a give-up play? · Quoting EJ Smith: Still no Saquon Barkley on this drive. It's been all Elijah Mitchell.
He's doing about every hamstring stretch I've ever seen on the sideline right now. No trainers around him or anything, though. #Eagles
Why it's #1 Saquon Barkley (top-50)

OK, here's everything I saw from the press box ...
Hurts goes in the medical tent with what I presume is the NFL's concussion spotter.
The concussion spotter came out of the tent and went to look at a video monitor with Hurts still in there.
Hurts came out of the tent to watch the game while he waited, and saw Dalton throw the red-zone interception. He was clearly frustrated not to be in the game.
He's now on the sideline with the rest of the quarterbacks. Seems OK. #Eagles · Quoting EJ Smith: Jalen Hurts just came out of the medical tent just in time to watch that Andy Dalton red-zone interception.
He is fired up on the sideline now as (I presume) he waits to find out if he's cleared to return. #Eagles
Why it's #2 Left the game · Jalen Hurts (top-50)
Left the game Activated

- Sep 28 EJ Smith (X) The weird thing here is that the concussion spotter left the tent and watched the video of the hit back. Is that part of the protocol? · Quoting EJ Smith: Jalen Hurts was evaluated for a concussion but isn ow cleared to return, per the #Eagles.

Quinyon Mitchell is walking toward the #Eagles sideline and going into the medical tent now.
Walking slowly, but under his own power. · Quoting EJ Smith: Quinyon Mitchell is injured. Getting looked at by trainers now. #Eagles

Here's the explanation: You can only use the full 48 spots on the active roster if you have eight offensive linemen active.
With Lane Johnson being ruled out late, the #Eagles only have seven active offensive linemen and therefore couldn't use that final spot. · Quoting EJ Smith: I'll be curious to hear Nick Sirianni's explanation for the #Eagles only dressing 47 players for today's game, especially with Cole Payton a healthy scratch.
Teams are permitted 48 on the active gameday roster (49 with a designated third QB.)

- Oct 4 EJ Smith (X) How are we already trying to blame Nick? It’s pretty clearly a result of their all-pro right tackle deciding to take a personal day an hour before the game starts. What the fuck would you like Nick to do about that? · Quoting EJ Smith: I'll be curious to hear Nick Sirianni's explanation for the #Eagles only dressing 47 players for today's game, especially with Cole Payton a healthy scratch. Teams are permitted 48 on the active gameday roster (49 with a designated third QB.)

- From last week … · Quoting EJ Smith: A Zach Ertz reunion with the #Eagles is on the table, according to league sources. Ertz is nearing the nine-month mark of recovery from a major knee injury and nothing is imminent, but Ertz would welcome a return and makes sense for the team. Story here
- Credit to @Jeff_McLane for reporting this first. Interesting that he noted a potential change at center in his report. Drew Kendall has much more experience at center and I heard over the offseason that he has a strong handle on making pre-snap protection calls. · Quoting EJ Smith: Thoughts on the #Eagles placing Landon Dickerson on IR, published here: - Dickerson had been battling through an apparent injury since camp - I'd expect Drew Kendall to take the starting spot - A hat tip to Dickerson for playing through a litany of injuries in his career

Discussing Cam Latu on the @PHLY_Eagles show right now.
Have some thoughts … · Quoting EJ Smith: Four of the #Eagles players waived yesterday got claimed by other teams:
TE Cam Latu (Patriots)
DB Kapena Gushiken (Colts)
OL Myles Hinton (Bengals)
OT Cameron Williams (Falcons)

EJ Smith: Questionable
Est. return: Feb 15
- Willie Lampkin is also on the kick return unit, which is objectively very fun to see. #Eagles · Quoting EJ Smith: Markel Bell is also back at practice today. Him and Willie Lampkin are on the field goal unit, which is a decent hint about who may be active in Week 1. #Eagles
Game Plays 8 in-game updates such as touchdowns, sacks and drives
- Just a comedy of errors here. #Eagles get a false start from Markel Bell with the play-clock expiring on fourth-and-4 in the red zone. Then an illegal formation penalty on Jordan Mailata wipes away a made field goal. Then Jake Elliott doinks it on the re-try. · Quoting EJ Smith: Play stupid games ...
- An encapsulation of what kind of day it was the for the #Eagles offense on third down: · Quoting EJ Smith: Saying nothing of the call, rough rep for Cam Jurgens on that third-and-2 run. #Eagles
- 0-for-11. #Eagles try to draw the Rams offside on fourth down, but are sending the punt team out with 3:07 left in the fourth quarter. · Quoting EJ Smith: They're now 0-for-10 on third down. Defense has been excellent today, but it's been another worrying second-half performance from the offense. Elements may be playing a factor for both offenses, but still ...
- They're now 0-for-10 on third down. Defense has been excellent today, but it's been another worrying second-half performance from the offense. Elements may be playing a factor for both offenses, but still ... · Quoting EJ Smith: #Eagles are now 0-for-8 on third down. Per @TruMediaSports, they haven't won a game without converting on a single third down since at least 2000.
- #Eagles offense goes three-and-out. Protection has been shaky in the first half. Somewhat understandable with all the moving parts, but it's stalling drives. · Quoting EJ Smith: #Eagles defense forces a quick three-and-out courtesy of a really nice run stuff from Moro Ojomo and an open-field tackle from Riq Woolen the play before. Big opportunity for the offense coming up.
- And it works! Jalen Hurts finds Makai Lemon for a 13-yard gain. #Eagles · Quoting EJ Smith: It's fourth-and-2 from the 47-yard line. Nick Sirianni keeps the offense on the field ...
- Make that two in the first two plays · Quoting EJ Smith: The #Eagles have now registered a first down on first-and-10.
- Direct quote from Jalen Hurts on this answer was: "It's a great play. It's a great play. Y'all will dig. Y'all will try to figure something out." · Quoting EJ Smith: Jalen Hurts gave a knowing smile when asked about the first touchdown to Dallas Goedert (which came on four verts) and gave the following answer: “It’s a great play. It’s a great play. Y’all can figure it out.” #Eagles
The River 15 newest first
- Not seeing Jonathan Greenard here, either. · Quoting EJ Smith: Greetings from #Eagles practice, where I do not see DeVonta Smith or Tay Wicks. I *do* see Dallas Goedert going through warmups.
- Eagles vs. Jaguars: 8 winners, 8 losers, 6 IDKs
- Jordan Mailata on now being the only remaining starter from the #Eagles Super Bowl LIX team: · Quoting EJ Smith: The average age of the #Eagles starting five offensive linemen at the time of Super Bowl LIX was just over 28. Yet there's a real chance Jordan Mailata is the only one of them who will start for the team this Sunday vs. the Jags. Crazy how quickly the group deteriorated.
- Moot point. Jake Elliott is good from 56 yards out. #Eagles lead 6-3. · Quoting EJ Smith: Really tough sack to take there. #Eagles
- To clear this up, this is much more of a reflection of the personnel rather than Sean Mannion. I'd argue he doesn't have a better choice right now, but that doesn't change the fact that the #Eagles are not ahead of the curve compared to the Johnson's and McVay's of the world. · Quoting EJ Smith: Not to become the multiple TE sets guy (shoutout @pdomo), but most of the league's best offenses are going toward heavy sets just as the #Eagles lean the furthest into being an 11-personnel offense.
- My main takeaway: The #Eagles run game craters in the second half to an almost inexplicable degree. · Quoting EJ Smith: Going through where the #Eagles rank offensively in the first half vs. the second. What stands out to you?
- *taps the sign · Quoting EJ Smith: Gotta toss out these swing passes to Makai Lemon, btw.
- Epps is on the sideline with his helmet on. #Eagles · Quoting EJ Smith: Michael Carter II is at safety in place of Marcus Epps. #Eagles
- Zach Ertz: “I don’t think it’s a coincidence that they put me here. … that’s something I’ve really taken pride in during the latter stages of my career.” #Eagles · Quoting EJ Smith: Zach Ertz’s locker is right next to Eli Stowers now. An ideal mentor for the #Eagles rookie TE.
- Gotta toss out these swing passes to Makai Lemon, btw. · Quoting EJ Smith: Such a weird offensive day for the #Eagles, who have been good and aggressive in bad situations (third downs, early downs behind the sticks) but unable to consistently find positive plays when "on schedule" on first and second downs.
- I’d heard in the spring that Kendall has impressed in meetings and has a very strong handle on the pre-snap calls. This could also be the #Eagles attempt to ease Kendall in at a spot he can get more help against Jeffery Simmons. Or, could be the team setting the OL up with a long view that includes Jurgens at guard next to Kendall for the season. · Quoting EJ Smith: Mentioned on Thursday’s @PHLY_Eagles podcast that I suspected this is where things were headed. Now seems imminent that Cam Jurgens will move to LG to facilitate Drew Kendall at center. There could be a few reasons why, as we discussed at length here
- From yesterday ... DeVonta Smith's time is now. The #Eagles believe he's always been capable of more. And now he'll get the chance to be a heavily featured No. 1 WR in a Sean Mannion's new-look offense. Story here: · Quoting EJ Smith: There's been a palpable buzz internally all offseason about what DeVonta Smith will look like as the unquestioned WR1 for the #Eagles this season. Why? Because Smith has been preparing — and quietly pining — for this chance for years now. Story here
- Shameless victory lap time … · Quoting EJ Smith: Nice PBU from Josh Jobe. I like Jobe. He's got pterodactyl arms and I think it's generally a good idea to take a flyer on an Alabama defensive back. #Eagles
- Injury settlements: #Chiefs C.J. Hanson, Chris Oladokun, E.J. Smith #Raiders Chase Roberts #Chargers Kyle Kennard #Vikings Jacob Roberts #Commanders TJ. Maguranyanga #Bills Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles #Bears Ray-Ray McCloud
- Zach Ertz potential return to the Eagles is "on the table," per EJ Smith.
