John Lynch on KNBR: “That was one of the best collective efforts from our secondary that we’ve had in a long time around here. That’s where Raheem cut his teeth.” Lynch adds that Morris ID'd Renardo Green immediately after joining the 49ers as a player who could blossom in 2026 · Quoting David Lombardi: The dime package the 49ers employed for 8 snaps in Week 1 was a great glimpse into the MAJOR 2026 defensive evolution. More on that later... The most ridiculous part of the fake Renardo Green trade rumors this offseason: Corner was actually the 49ers' defensive strength last season. SF just didn't have a pass rush, and Saleh's system (like any system) was reliant on that. Now they have a rush, and Raheem Morris also has a PHD in DB play. Week 1 saw Morris unleash the 49ers' CBs in much more aggressive, frequent cushion-free/press-man fashion. • Sep 28 Theo Mackie (X) Stand by this, btw. With good protection, Brissett could've worked to the back side, but under pressure he had to go to his first read. Just had to trust his WR, but Marv didn't win the rep — not that losing one rep is a crime. · Quoting Theo Mackie: Welp, Brissett wanted Marv on the corner route against press coverage there, but he couldn't get any separation from Deommodore Lenoir. First target of the game for Marv.

Expanding on this: The 49ers used their newfound DB orientation, rooted in their new DB-oriented DC, to run 2-high defenses at the highest rate of the Shanahan era. Prior years had already seen significant coverage evolutions — especially the Cover-4 shift of 2019, but 2026 looks to be the biggest defensive shift yet in this Shanahan decade. (Factor in the big increase in 5-man fronts, too) · Quoting David Lombardi: The dime package the 49ers employed for 8 snaps in Week 1 was a great glimpse into the MAJOR 2026 defensive evolution. Week 1 saw Morris unleash the 49ers' CBs in much more aggressive, frequent cushion-free/press-man fashion. Morris trusted his corners to make big plays, and Green delivered when he fooled Matthew Stafford — who didn't see him before his sprint back in front of Puka Nacua on that second-quarter corner route. The 49ers actually now have enough good DBs to employ that dime package that also ft. Jack Jones on the field at the same time with Green, Deommodore Lenoir, and Stout.
