- Aug 31 Mike Kaye (X) Credit where due: The #Panthers got Reed, Smith, Curhan and Simmons all back on the p-squad without having to subject higher invested players to waivers. All four could and probably will suit up this season. Thornton, too, gets a chance to further improve after a rough summer. · Quoting Mike Kaye: First dozen players on #Panthers' 17-man practice squad: LB Maz Mwansa (international exemption) WR David Moore S Isaiah Simmons G Jake Curhan OLB Cam Gill WR Ja'seem Reed CB Corey Thornton OL Isaia Glass CB DeVonta Smith WR Casey Washington DT Parker Petersen RB Tre Tyus

- Kaye’s Take: The #Panthers’ cornerback situation is complicated beyond just fielding starters. If you’re using Akayleb Evans as a starting cornerback, you’re not having him play gunner on punt (he’d be gassed most likely before the next rep on defense), which is where he’s most valuable, so you’re weakening two phases in one move. I think Chau Smith-Wade is better on the outside than in nickel but he also has special teams and package responsibilities. If they could find a trade taker for Ja’Tavion Sanders to bring in corner depth (Kelee Ringo with the Eagles makes sense, standout special teams player with defensive experience — basically Akayleb archetype), they could at least maneuver a bit better. Corey Thornton went from an OTA sensation to not making the 53 after a rough camp. Devonta Smith has upside, but again, you’re replacing the a top 5-7 corner duo in the league together.

“He’s going to get that opportunity real soon.” - Dave Canales on Corey Thornton.

- Canales brings up Marco Wilson and Corey Thornton as potential options to replace Akayleb Evans again. · Quoting Mike Kaye: “Chau will get his opportunity at some point,” #Panthers head coach Dave Canales said yesterday. He then went on to mention the rest of the uninjured CBs (even guys on p-squad) when addressing the rotation. Could be gamesmanship or an error or he felt he had already addressed Smith-Wade, who is arguably the best value player (based on selection vs. production)/most productive pick from Canales and Dan Morgan’s initial draft class. The team is almost exclusively using three safeties in nickel with Horn and Jackson out (logical, imo). CSW isn’t a particularly good run defender from the slot, but the defense did just give up 258 rushing yards and 3 TDs with him playing a single defensive snap. He was a career boundary corner in college and had probably the best preseason performance of the non-starters there (Kaye’s Take). Food for thought.
