- Oct 27 Mike Kaye (X) Canales brings up Marco Wilson and Corey Thornton as potential options to replace Akayleb Evans again. · Quoting Mike Kaye: “Chau will get his opportunity at some point,” #Panthers head coach Dave Canales said yesterday. He then went on to mention the rest of the uninjured CBs (even guys on p-squad) when addressing the rotation. Could be gamesmanship or an error or he felt he had already addressed Smith-Wade, who is arguably the best value player (based on selection vs. production)/most productive pick from Canales and Dan Morgan’s initial draft class. The team is almost exclusively using three safeties in nickel with Horn and Jackson out (logical, imo). CSW isn’t a particularly good run defender from the slot, but the defense did just give up 258 rushing yards and 3 TDs with him playing a single defensive snap. He was a career boundary corner in college and had probably the best preseason performance of the non-starters there (Kaye’s Take). Food for thought.
- Oct 27 Jacob Westendorf (X) Phillips had 8 pressures last year for Philly against GB. His absence would be huge. · Quoting Jason B. - Vested veterans (not subject to waivers) on the #Panthers roster bubble who can give the cut process some flexibility if needed: - TE Darren Waller - WR David Moore - G/T Jake Curhan - OT Stone Forsythe - RB AJ Dillon - CB Robert Rochell - CB Akayleb Evans - S Isaiah Simmons - OLB Cam Gill (Since there’s confusion: They’d become free agents immediately after release and can sign anywhere, including a p-squad.)
- Canales said RB Trevor Etienne was rolled up and they were checking his ankle. LB Bam Martin-Scott had a hamstring issue and didn't play, and CB Akayleb Evans was dealing with a neck issue.

- 6d Mike Kaye (X) The #Panthers only have two healthy cornerbacks on their 53-man roster and practice-squad CB Robert Rochell has already used all three of his p-squad elevations, so the Panthers are likely to make multiple moves at the position. Similarly, unless they feel comfortable with Sam Hecht backing up center AND guard, they'll need to elevate a lineman as well. · Quoting Mike Kaye: The #Panthers have ruled out OLB Jaelan Phillips (hamstring), LG Damien Lewis (knee), CB Akayleb Evans (knee/triceps) and G Torricelli Simpkins (ankle) for Green Bay. DT Bobby Brown (hand) is questionable.

- Oct 5 Mike Kaye (X) #Panthers HC Dave Canales said they left Akayleb Evans on the field after he gave up some big plays to see how he’d respond. He said he had a conversation with Evans during the game about that “opportunity.” He said he had a similar chat with Princely Umanmielen, which he wouldn’t have been able to do if he was calling offensive plays.
- Oct 5 Mike Kaye (X) Rewatching the game on All-22: #Panthers DC Ejiro Evero had a pretty sound game plan against the Lions. With the Lions having quality TEs, he went heavy big nickel, and I liked Zakee Wheatley being the last line of defense because of his mix of size and tackling ability. Yeah, the pass rush didn't get there much and Akayleb Evans got picked on A LOT, but I thought the blitzing design and fluidity were pretty smart. They kept the run game in check. They were strategic with stunts and rotating guys on the edge, too.

- Akayleb Evans leaning on 2023, his preparation, and Mike Jackson as he looks to step in Sunday night
- #Panthers STC Tracy Smith said the Carolina kickoff coverage team is covering really well right now. He said if a special teams ace is promoted to a starter, he won't play on special teams and then needs to be replaced. Akayleb Evans, in particular, is a candidate to go from the team's best gunner to starting corner.

Canales mentions Will Lee and Akayleb Evans likely to start at CB with Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson on IR.
Says neither Horn or Jackson out for season. "8-ish weeks."
Mike Jack had surgery, but Jaycee did not need surgery. Rehabbing here.

- Sep 30 Mike Kaye (X) Kaye’s Take: The #Panthers’ cornerback situation is complicated beyond just fielding starters. If you’re using Akayleb Evans as a starting cornerback, you’re not having him play gunner on punt (he’d be gassed most likely before the next rep on defense), which is where he’s most valuable, so you’re weakening two phases in one move. I think Chau Smith-Wade is better on the outside than in nickel but he also has special teams and package responsibilities. If they could find a trade taker for Ja’Tavion Sanders to bring in corner depth (Kelee Ringo with the Eagles makes sense, standout special teams player with defensive experience — basically Akayleb archetype), they could at least maneuver a bit better. Corey Thornton went from an OTA sensation to not making the 53 after a rough camp. Devonta Smith has upside, but again, you’re replacing the a top 5-7 corner duo in the league together.
- Sep 30 Josh Kendall (X) The Panthers are down their top two corners for a while · Quoting Joe Person: What the Jaycee Horn/Mike Jackson situation means in the short term: Will Lee and Akayleb Evans SZN. What it means in the long term: depends on the short term. But … not great.
